Legal Insight | Uganda | The Lotteries and Gaming Act, 2016

Earlier this year, the Lotteries and Gaming Act, 2016 came into force. The Act, which was assented to by the President in December 2015, seeks to reform and consolidate legislation on lotteries, gaming, betting and casino activities, and has accordingly repealed the National Lotteries Act (Cap. 191) and the Gaming and Pool Betting (Control and Taxation) Act (Cap 292).

Highlights of the Act, among others, include a new Board, new operational licences, minimum capital requirements, increased gaming tax, fit and proper requirements, restrictions on minors and the establishment of a national electronic monitoring system.
