Our group stands out due to our “one-firm” approach to cross border deals. Our lawyers work in virtual teams across multiple offices to not only offer seamless legal advisory and transactional services for cross-border deals, but also to take advantage of cross-border training and other opportunities to build the network’s resources. Through this collaborative approach our network of 600 lawyers in 15 major African cities are able to handle complex multi-jurisdictional matters such as the US$ 473 million deal we completed for Standard Chartered Private Equity in UAE, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique and Tanzania with ease. In addition, we represent in the financing by OPIC in the sum of US$ 82 million to Wananchi Group (Holdings) Ltd and its related companies incorporated in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Uganda, Mauritius and United Arab Emirates for the a project involving development of television programming, development and operation of satellite management and delivery of business devices, providing broadband internet, data and telephonic services.
We have acted in many firsts in our jurisdictions. For example for the National Government of Kenya in connection with the issuance of Kenya’s first international sovereign bond amounting to US$ 1.5 billion-the largest ever debut offering in Sub Saharan Africa. We have sector experts in this field who have handled several deals on their own for clients such as First National Bank, Botswana & Rand Merchant bank.
When we say we have an on-the ground African presence, we mean exactly that. Our lawyers are African and are in Africa. Our sector experts have hands-on experience in exclusively handling large financial transactions on the continent and have strong business and regulatory relationships in each jurisdiction which means that they have a good understanding of how to structure a deal in light of potential political risks.
In 2013 alone, we handled over 61 large financial transactions. Plus, the cumulative years of experience of our lawyers in this sector group totals 92 years. We have advised many clients on the structuring of complicated and ground-breaking financing solutions such as advising PTA bank on a US$ 1 billion Euro Medium Term Note issuance. The deal was innovative because it involved the exchange of outstanding US$ 300 million 6.875% Noted due in 2016 for new US$ 300 million 6.375% Notes due in 2018, under the US$ 1 billion Medium Term Note Programme, and which were listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.
