Legal Notes | November 2018

ALN presents the November 2018 edition of Legal Notes, a publication that seeks to inform our clients of salient legal and business issues in various African jurisdictions.

The underlying theme of our 2017 editions were that storm clouds were building across the world –Brexit, Trump, North Korea’s belligerence, polarising elections and escalating warfare in South Sudan, Syria and Iraq – and we asked the question of what impact this would have in Africa. Our contributors largely felt that Africa would power through these troubles – which largely proved to be the right call.

The last 12 months have been equally action packed – the Kenyan Supreme Court overturned the August 2017 presidential election result, new leaders rose to power in South Africa, Ethiopia and Zimbabwe, there is  détente in Korea, the war in Syria has been largely won by the Assad regime and Brexit is edging towards its end game.

Regardless of that tumult, Africa is continuing to make good progress in many areas – especially building infrastructure, installing renewable energy and adopting fintech. From this edition of Legal Notes, progress is being made all over the continent and ALN firms are still optimistic that Africa holds its future prosperity in its own hands.

In the partner roundup editorial feature article, ‘Green Shoots – New Hope for Africa’, we ask ALN Chairman Dr. Diarra and three of the continent’s leading lawyers to consider the impact on Africa of the recent political and investment climate changes in many important African countries. They provide some candid thoughts on the impact these changes will have, if any, in their jurisdictions and what their countries are doing to advance their economic, social and political development agenda.

We are also delighted to feature investment insights from Ms Anne Ericksson, former senior regional partner, PWC along with many other interesting articles from around the ALN network.

Please take this opportunity to further explore the Africa-wide insights covered and do not hesitate to contact the Legal Notes Editorial Team (legalnotes@africalegalnetwork.com) should you have any questions or specific areas of interest.
