    Export Processing Zones Exempt from Rent and Tenancy Control

    Anjarwalla & Khanna acted for Mistry Jadva Parbat, an export processing zone (EPZ) developer in a judicial review application challenging a decision of the Business Premises Rent Tribunal (Tribunal) that it has jurisdiction to hear and determine a complaint arising in respect of a tenancy in EPZ.       Nairobi Property Summit

      A number of lawyers from Anjarwalla & Khanna participated in the Nairobi Property Summit, which explored the opportunities and challenges for the city of Nairobi in 2012 and beyond.  Karim Anjarwalla moderated a panel on: ‘An emerging modern African city: the challenge of structuring and financing property development’; Amyn Mussa presented on ‘Managing Risks in Large Real Estate Projects’ and Daniel Ngumy spoke on the property tax laws currently being enforced by the Kenya Revenue Authority.

      China Africa Investment Forum, Beijing

      John Miles, Chairman of ALN, presented a key note speaker address at the opening ceremony of the inaugural meeting of the Chinese Africa Investment Forum.  Run by the Chinese government and members of the Chinese private sector, the forum aims to advise Chinese businesses investing in Africa.  The meeting was attended by Chinese Ministries, African ambassadors, Chinese businesses and law firms, and the Chinese press.  John Miles spoke on the opportunities and challenges of investing in Africa.

      International Arbitration in Africa Seminar, London

      ALN and Stephenson Harwood co-hosted a seminar on international arbitration in Africa.  The seminar covered the history of arbitration in Africa, drafting arbitration clauses, challenges of arbitrating in Africa, enforcement of awards, investment arbitration, LCIA/ICC in Africa, and the future of arbitration in Africa.  Speakers included John Miles – ALN’s Chairman, Roderick Cordara QC of Essex Court Chambers, Swithin Munyantwali of the International Law Institute – African Centre for Legal Excellence, and Elizabeth Karanja and Nikhil Desai of J Miles & Co.

      Competition Law Seminar

      ALN and Anjarwalla & Khanna hosts a two day seminar and training event on competition law in East Africa and beyond, focused on comparative approaches in the EAC community and developments in the European Union and South Africa. Panelists included ALN members from Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. Training presentations on different regulatory approaches to mergers, abuse of market, and consumer protection were made by Nkonzo Hlatshwayo, Competition Partner at Webber Wentzel, and Professor Philippa Watson of Essex Court Chambers, UK.

      Key Growth Sectors in Emerging African Economies

      ALN and ADEPT Chambers hosted a seminar on Key Growth Sectors in Emerging African Economies in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The seminar was addressed by the Permanent Secretary in Tanzania’s Ministry of East African Affairs. Government representatives, private equity investors, and panelist from ALN’s affiliate in Dubai and ALN’s member firms from eight countries discussed trends, challenges and investment environment in Banking, Capital Markets, Energy, Mining, Telecommunications, Infrastructure, Investment and Trade in African countries. ALN participants included Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia, Mauritius, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Burundi.
